Data Science Independent Study and Research (01:219:400)
The Data Science program is excited to offer 01:219:400: Data Science Independent Study and Research, a course designed to allow students to pursue individualized study and research projects in data science under the supervision of a faculty mentor.
Course Overview
This course provides an opportunity for academic inquiry beyond the regular curriculum. Students will work closely with a faculty sponsor to develop a unique project, outline objectives, and determine deliverables.
Eligibility
- Open only to declared Data Science majors who have completed Data 101 and Statistical Inference.
- Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2.
- Students must identify a faculty mentor willing to supervise their project and receive approval from the Data Science faculty co-directors.
Credits
1–3 credits (BA: By Arrangement).
Independent Study Enrollment Process
To enroll in an Independent Study course, students must complete the steps below in coordination with a faculty sponsor and the Data Science Senior Program Coordinator.
Steps to Enroll
- Identify a faculty sponsor who agrees to supervise the Independent Study.
- Contact the Senior Program Coordinator (SPC) to request enrollment via email .
- The SPC verifies eligibility and completes the required enrollment form.
- The SPC provides the student with a Special Permission Number (SPN) to register for the course.
- The SPC confirms the student’s registration and notifies the student.
- After registration, contact the faculty sponsor to discuss course structure, expectations, and next steps.

The syllabus and assessment plan will be individualized and developed by the supervising faculty member.
